Bolts
A bolt looks similar to screws, but has much finer threads and is used to fasten objects together. This can be achieved by either fastening into the last object by means of a threaded hole or pushing the bolt through all the objects and compressing them together with a nut.
Types available
Gutter bolt
- Used during the installation of zinc gutters.
- The gutter lies inside the U-shaped bracket, which is fastened to the rafters, and the gutter bolt is fed through the bracket and the gutter where after is secured with a square nut.
Hook bolt
- Also known as J-bolts
- Often used in roofing applications where the hook part is hooked onto the support structure below the roof sheeting
- The straight part then goes through a hole in the roof sheeting where after it’s fastened with a nut.
- Can be used to hang light objects, such as planters, onto metal structures.
Machine screw
- Can be used to fasten components together by means of through holes and secured with a nut.
- Components can also be fastened together by passing the machine screw through the parts and then screwing it into the rearmost component.
Used to fasten components in machines, tools, appliances and electronic devices.
Machine screw versions
Countersunk machine screw
- The countersunk machine screw has a flat countersunk head.
- Ideal for application where a flush finish is required.
Cheesehead machine screw
- Features a rounded head as well as deep slots in the head to allow increased driving power.
Set screw
- Have uniform threads – meaning they are not tapered like the thread on wood screws.
- Can be used to fasten objects together by inserting the screw from the one end and securing it with the nut on the other end.
- The nut and bolt combination compresses everything together.
- To tighten the nut requires a socket and wrench or a spanner.
Extra information
- If, while tightening the nut, the bolt turns with it, a second spanner or wrench is required to hold-on to the bolt while the nut is tightened.
Cover plate screw
- Used to attach the cover plates of electrical wall switches to the switch itself.
- Can also be used to secure the two halves of an electrical plug to each other.
Door knob screw
- These longer bolts are designed to fasten the two halves of door knobs or handles together.
- Mostly used on the interior handle or knob where after it gets covered to prevent easy removal
